Research Areas

Sexually reproducing organisms produce haploid gametes through meiosis, a specialized cell division program, to transmit genetic information. Accurate segregation of meiotic chromosomes relies on a series of meiosis-specific events. Dysregulation of these events can lead to aneuploidy, causing birth defects (such as Down syndrome) and other diseases such as infertility and miscarriages in humans. Research in the Gao Lab uses Caenorhabditis elegans as the main in vivo research model to elucidate the assembly and regulation of meiosis-specific structures and explore the internal and external factors causing abnormal meiotic chromosome segregation.
