Research Areas

1. Cilia are "antenna-like" organelles that protrude from the surface of cells and play an important role in signal transduction, developmental regulation, and disease processes. Abnormal ciliogenesis leads to a group of diseases called "ciliopathies". Ciliogenesis and its regulation is therefore a very important area of cell biology research. Several new proteins that affect ciliogenesis are being investigated.

2. The function of cilia in receiving extracellular signals has long been studied. It is not clear whether cilia can release active substances for intercellular communication. The function and biological significance of cilia in intercellular communication is being investigated in the context of extracellular vesicles, a hot spot in cell biology research.

Through these studies, new mechanisms of ciliogenesis will be elucidated, new functions of cilia will be discovered, and new targets will be provided for the treatment of ciliopathies and cancers.
